Harold Tisher
YANKTON - Harold L. Tisher, 92, died Sunday, June 11, 2000, at
Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton.
He was born Aug. 3, 1907, near Britton. He grew up on the family
farm near Amherst and attended rural schools. He graduated from
Amherst High School in 1925, then attended South Dakota State
University. He received his bachelor's degree in pharmacy, then
received an Eli Lilly Scholarship and attended Purdue University. He
received his master's degree in chemistry in 1932.
He married Arletta Wurster on July 15, 1934. He worked as a
traveling pharmaceutical salesman for several companies including Eli
Lilly, Johnson & Johnson, Squibb, and Davis Bros. Wholesale. He
traveled throughout Colorado, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota and
Minnesota.
In partnership with Charles Clancy he purchased Heitgen Pharmacy
in Yankton in 1945. After Clancy left the business in 1958, his
partnership was purchased by Ken Jones. Tisher retired in 1972.
He was a member of the state Board of Pharmacy and served as
president. He also was a long-time member of the South Dakota
Pharmaceutical Association and named for their Outstanding Community
Service Award in 1968. He was a 55-year member of the Yankton Area
Chamber of Commerce, serving as president in 1966, a 60-year member
Kiwanian and long-time member of the First United Methodist Church.
He served the church as a member of the Trustee Board at Dakota
Wesleyan University for six years and the Republican Party.
He was an active member of the Masonic Fraternity, past master of
the St. John's Lodge No. 1 and district master of District No. 1. He
was grand historian for the organization for 23 years at the Grand
Lodge and drafted a book documenting the first 100 years of Masonry in
South Dakota. He was also a 33rd degree member of the Yankton
Consistory of Scottish Rite Masonry, past wise master of the Yankton
Chapter of Rose Croix, past member of York Rite and longtime Shrine
Club member. He was a past patron of Keystone Chapter No. 33 of the
Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the Merritt DeCamp Chapter
of the Order of DeMolay, a former member of the Yankton City
Commission, chairman of the Yankton Bicentennial Committee, and
co-chair of the Territorial Pageant of the Yankton Centennial in 1961.
Survivors include his wife, Arletta; a daughter, Carol Flynn of
Sioux Falls; a son, Dr. C. Craig of Gainesville, FL; four
grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services begin at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First United
Methodist Church in Yankton with burial in the Yankton Cemetery.
Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. today at the Ray, Cantrell &
Wintz Funeral Home in Yankton with the family present from 6:30 to 8
p.m. A Masonic service begins at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorials may be directed to the Yankton County Historical Society and
the University of South Dakota Speech and Hearing Center sponsored by
the Scottish Rite Foundation.
